Before inspection
It is important that you and your staff feel prepared for an inspection. This can help alleviate stress not only for yourself, but for all staff members, throughout the process.
You may want to consider what needs to be in place prior to receiving ‘the’ call, such as: how you wish the day to progress once the call is received, how you want the two days to run whilst the inspection progresses and when and how you will reflect afterwards.
Top tip – make sure all staff including part time staff are aware you have received the call.

During inspection
Ensuring everyone knows what is expected and what will be happening on each day, can help things run smoothly and help you to feel in control.
Sharing the plan for the day with everyone each morning can help with this, as can regular ‘check ins’ throughout the inspection as a school community. This can help your team to feel supported both from a process and a wellbeing perspective.
You might want to consider this in your planning.

After inspection

After inspection
Straight after inspection take the opportunity to thank staff and the school community for their on going work and support of the school. Then reflect on the inspection process and learning points for the future, noting any changes that will benefit you in a future inspection. After this is the time to gather together your best team to look at the outcomes from the inspection and start to make a plan of attack, what needs to be done, who is best to do it, what resources will they need, what external support if any is required etc.

Support
The ‘Ofsted window’ is one of the trickiest places to be for a school leader, followed closely by the phase immediately after inspection, until the report is published.
During this time, we strongly recommend you focus on your personal wellbeing as well as that of your school community.
We offer a targeted monthly Ofsted peer support session exactly for this purpose, to discuss the process, share resources and check in on your wellbeing. We have a host of other support on our wellbeing pages.
We also hope that in time, these pages will provide you with a great deal of collective guidance from Norfolk schools.
